Vancopic 1000

Vancomycin injection is a potent glycopeptide antibiotic primarily used in hospitals to treat severe or life-threatening bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-positive bacteria like MRSA. It works by stopping bacteria from building their protective cell walls.

Primary Uses

  • Severe Infections: Treats infections of the bloodstream (septicemia), heart lining (endocarditis), bones (osteomyelitis), lungs (pneumonia), and skin.
  • Penicillin Allergy: Serves as a critical alternative for patients who need treatment for heart valve disease but are allergic to penicillin.
  • Surgical Prophylaxis: Given to high-risk patients to prevent heart lining infections (endocarditis) during dental or upper respiratory procedures.

Administration & Important Considerations

  • Intravenous (IV) Use Only: For systemic infections, it is given slowly into a vein (over 60 minutes or more).
  • Oral Use for C. difficile: While IV vancomycin does not enter the gut, oral vancomycin is uniquely used to treat Clostridium difficile (C. diff) associated diarrhea and staphylococcal enterocolitis.
  • Potential Side Effects: Rapid infusion can cause "Red Man Syndrome" (a flushing or rash on the face and upper torso). It also requires careful monitoring by healthcare providers due to potential risks to kidney and hearing health.
