Sodium valproate injection is an intravenous (IV) anticonvulsant primarily used to rapidly control seizures in emergency settings. It is given when oral medication is not possible, such as in critical care units, for status epilepticus, or for short-term perioperative seizure prevention.
Primary Clinical Uses
- Acute Seizure Control: Used for the emergency management of generalized and focal seizures.
- Status Epilepticus: Administered intravenously as a first-line or second-line treatment to stop prolonged, continuous seizure activity.
- Short-Term Oral Substitution: Used as a temporary alternative for patients with epilepsy or bipolar disorder who are temporarily unable to take oral medication (e.g., while fasting before or after a surgery).
- Bipolar Disorder: Sometimes used in hospital settings for the acute management of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder when oral administration is not feasible.
