Linezolid tablets are a powerful oxazolidinone antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, especially those resistant to other antibiotics. Common indications include pneumonia, complicated skin and soft tissue infections, and bloodstream infections. It works by stopping bacterial growth.
Primary Uses
- Pneumonia: Treats both community-acquired and hospital-acquired bacterial lung infections.
- Skin Infections: Addresses complicated and uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections, including diabetic foot infections (without bone involvement).
- Resistant Bacteria: Highly effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE).
Dosage & Administration
- Typical Adult Dose: Usually 600 mg taken orally every 12 hours for 10 to 28 days, depending on the infection.
- Administration: Can be taken with or without food.
- Complete the Course: It is essential to finish the entire prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the bacteria from returning and developing resistance.
Important Warnings & Precautions
- Viral Infections: Linezolid only treats bacteria and will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
- Blood Counts: Long-term use (more than 14 days) can lower white blood cell and platelet counts; your doctor may require weekly blood tests.
- Drug Interactions: Linezolid is a weak monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. Taking it with certain antidepressants (like SSRIs) or large amounts of tyramine-rich foods (e.g., aged cheeses, cured meats) can cause severe spikes in blood pressure or serotonin syndrome.
