Imipenem & Cilastatin Injection I.P. is a powerful, broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic used exclusively in hospital or clinical settings to treat severe, complicated bacterial infections. It is typically reserved for treating conditions like pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, and complicated urinary tract infections.
How it Works
This medication is a combination of two active drugs:
- Imipenem: A potent antibiotic that kills bacteria by preventing them from forming the essential protective cell walls they need to survive.
- Cilastatin: An enzyme inhibitor that prevents the kidneys from rapidly breaking down imipenem. This ensures imipenem stays active in your body at therapeutic levels for a longer period.
Primary Medical Uses
Physicians prescribe this injection to treat:
- Lower respiratory tract infections: Severe cases such as bacterial pneumonia.
- Intra-abdominal infections: Serious infections in the stomach area.
- Complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs): Severe or recurrent infections of the bladder and kidneys.
- Bacterial septicemia: Life-threatening bloodstream infections (blood poisoning).
- Skin and soft tissue infections: Including complex or deep wound infections.
- Gynecologic infections: Severe infections of the female reproductive tract and pelvic region.
- Bone and joint infections: Such as osteomyelitis or infectious arthritis.
- Endocarditis: Serious bacterial infections of the inner heart lining and heart valves.
