Iron sucrose injection is an intravenous (IV) medication used to treat iron deficiency anemia. It is primarily prescribed for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD)—including those on dialysis—who cannot tolerate or have not responded well to oral iron supplements.

How It Works

  • Replenishment: It directly delivers iron into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system to rapidly replenish your body's iron stores.
  • Red Blood Cell Production: The provided iron is used by the body to produce hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body.

Administration & Monitoring

  • Healthcare Setting: It must be administered by a doctor or nurse in a clinical setting (such as a hospital or specialized outpatient center).
  • Procedure: It is given as a slow IV push or as a diluted drip over several minutes to hours, depending on the dosage.
  • Monitoring: Healthcare providers closely monitor patients during and for at least 30 minutes after the injection to watch for potential allergic or adverse reactions (like drops in blood pressure).
