Esomeprazole 40 mg injection is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat acid-related stomach and intestinal conditions. It is primarily prescribed for adults and children (1 month or older) who need acid suppression but cannot take oral medication, and to prevent rebleeding from stomach or duodenal ulcers after an endoscopy.
Primary Clinical Uses
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Short-term treatment for severe acid reflux and erosive esophagitis.
- Ulcer Bleeding Risk Reduction: Used in adults post-endoscopy to lower the risk of rebleeding from acute stomach or duodenal ulcers.
- NSAID-Induced Ulcers: Healing and prevention of stomach and duodenal ulcers associated with continuous non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use.
- Stress Ulcer Prevention: Often administered in seriously ill hospital patients to prevent the formation of stress-induced ulcers.
