Doxycycline injection is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic used to treat or prevent a wide range of severe bacterial infections. It is typically administered intravenously (IV) in a hospital or clinical setting for patients who cannot take oral medication or when a rapid, highly effective blood level of the antibiotic is required.
Doxycycline injection is primarily used to combat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, which include:
- Respiratory & Urinary Infections: Pneumonia, bacterial bronchitis, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible strains like Klebsiella and Haemophilus influenzae.
- Tick and Vector-Borne Diseases: Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, and tick fevers (caused by Rickettsiae bacteria).
- Sexually Transmitted Infections: Treatment for syphilis, gonorrhea, chancroid, and chlamydia.
- Severe Skin Conditions: Used to treat severe acne or rosacea when oral therapy is insufficient or not tolerated.
- Malaria: Prevention and treatment of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.
- Gastrointestinal & Blood Infections: Infections caused by specific gram-negative bacteria (such as Shigella and E. coli) and other rare conditions like psittacosis or relapsing fever.
