Artesunate injection is primarily a life-saving, fast-acting antimalarial medication used for the initial management of severe and complicated malaria, particularly that caused by Plasmodium falciparum.
Key Uses & Indications
- Severe Malaria: Indicated for adults and children experiencing severe or life-threatening malaria (e.g., affecting the brain, kidneys, or resulting in severe anemia).
- Rapid Parasite Clearance: It acts swiftly to eliminate the malaria parasite from the bloodstream, rapidly bringing down parasite loads.
- Comorbid Treatments: Used alongside other medications (such as 8-aminoquinoline) to address specific Plasmodium strains like P. vivax or P. ovale.
- Traveller's Malaria: Often used for treating severe malaria cases in individuals who have travelled to highly endemic areas.
Administration & Protocol
- Always Professional: The injection must be prepared and administered by a doctor or nurse, either intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM).
- Dosing Schedule: It is typically administered at 0, 12, and 24 hours, and then once daily until the patient can tolerate oral medications.
- Follow-up Therapy: Because the injection only treats the active infection, a full 3-day course of an appropriate oral Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) must follow once the patient recovers enough to swallow pills.
